UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Individual Horror

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
