Two Cuba-Destined Relief Vessels Listed Lost following Setting Sail from Mexico.
A comprehensive search and rescue operation is presently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two unlocated sailing vessels carrying aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Naval Search and Rescue Efforts Launched
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board a minimum of nine personnel, as stated by a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their arrival, the navy said.
Background of Aid to the Island
Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country grapples with widespread national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are outfitted with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort stated.
The nine crew members are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.
"The group is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Recent Relief Shipment
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the nation.
That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, medicines, formula milk, cycles and food.
Larger Geopolitical Backdrop
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the country was initiated.
International organizations have since raised alarms about ""critical" supply shortages, with over 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba amid power shortages.
Political pressure have intensified in recent months, with remarks from various leaders highlighting the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.
Reacting to certain proposals, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that early stages of discussions commenced, although their current progress remains unclear.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.
At this time, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
