The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
