The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being constantly eating your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
