Outrage as Beloved South African DJ Gunned Down in Johannesburg.
A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country struggling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the forty-year-old media personality was approached by three individuals, one of whom opened fire on him before escaping on foot.
The reason behind the shooting is unknown and no one has been arrested are in custody, as per the official statement.
The Fatal Incident
Law enforcement revealed that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a premises in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.
He had spent several hours at the site overseeing the setup of safety equipment, which had been illegally inhabited by unidentified individuals, it was reported.
"Authorities believe the victim was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before running from the location on foot," authorities stated.
CCTV footage showed a suspect with dreadlocks and wearing what appeared to be a protective services outfit shooting on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.
Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.
Important clues, like bullet casings, were recovered from the crime scene.
Appeal for Witnesses
Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to determine their whereabouts," stated a police chief.
A Nation in Mourning
His sister, a close relative, said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am devastated. I am shattered," she stated.
"We know he was a champion for numerous individuals. He was a fearless commentator about subjects not many people were prepared to discuss. This is a profound tragedy."
She urged the public to not sharing disturbing footage from the incident, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, especially for Stock's young family.
Life Beyond the Decks
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that aired on a popular local digital satellite entertainment channel.
Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was involved in various business ventures, including private security, providing elite guarding services and securing high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in building administration and participated in building evictions.
National Shock
His killing has caused national trauma and led to an outpouring of tributes from his audience, the government and various organizations.
A cabinet official commented he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's untimely death.
"He was forthright fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my decisions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we ought to be," the minister added.
A party figurehead said the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a shock for all South Africans".
A industry leader said that "Stock was far beyond a TV personality. He was a gifted communicator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His dedication to creativity left an indefinable mark."
In a communication, the broadcaster he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his magnetism, approachability and quick humor, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
