Following a conclusive runoff election, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
With over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Recognized for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily built on promises to tackle rising insecurity and drastically curb migration.
He frequently blamed foreigners, notably the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face expulsion.
His plans featured U.S.-style measures such as erecting holding facilities, barriers, security fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Part of a Broader Shift
Many observers view Kast's win as part of a wider right-wing wave in the region, following recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
However, other experts also frame it as a extension of the established alternation of power between left and right-wing leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Strong Majority
Despite his decisive popular vote win, Kast does not command an clear majority in Congress, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even when various conservative parties are combined together.
This legislative situation may challenge his agenda, including a promise to slash public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.
"There are numerous aspects about what a Kast government will operate that we don't know because he has not explained the way he will do them," said a political analyst.
The expert added, "Regarding the economy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. But the area with much less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse throughout the race."
