Gus Atkinson increased England's injury problems when he left the ground on the second morning of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series.
Atkinson felt a problem in his left hamstring post-delivery of the fourth over at the MCG.
The England team reported Atkinson reported "discomfort" and was to take time off the field for further assessment "over the next few hours".
The series decider in this Ashes battle in Sydney gets underway on Sunday, 4 January.
The English side has previously lost strike bowlers one seamer to a knee injury and another paceman with an abdominal strain on the current trip.
