Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated anger after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The clip, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly worked in armed forces or defense roles.
"As we did, you all took an oath to safeguard and uphold this national charter," the lawmakers declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our governing document aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can decline improper directives, you can reject illegal orders, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that contravene the statutes or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reply
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he stated: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Answer
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats published a combined declaration condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they stated. "Congress members who appeared in the video all served our nation with great national pride and distinction. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the security of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged digital publications and withdraw his dangerous rhetoric before he causes harm," the announcement added.
Officials' Defiant Response
The officials who appeared in the video also issued a declaration.
"We are former service members and national security professionals who value this nation and took an pledge to safeguard and defend the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that sacred duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and duty to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They stated: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
More Political Comments
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this right away and absolutely."
The GOP leader defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress advising military personnel to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the terminology and establish all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on later that day, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to kill elected officials?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the official declared. "We see current representatives of the US Congress who conspired to arrange a video message to members of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can cause chaos, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally encouraging."
